We’ve all heard industry trainers and consultants preaching about the importance of pre-scanning, post-scanning and calibration/initializations. They may have you uneasy about your repair process and moreover, unsure of what supplemental training and tooling that may be required as you continue repairing vehicles.

Training is, without a doubt, important to a successful operation. At the same time, recognizing the difference between training and a sales pitch is arguably just as important. Is all of this fuss about scanning well-founded or is all the alarm a tactic to sell a tool or service you don’t necessarily need? What we know for sure is OEM’s will continue to build vehicles with computers and collision avoidance systems that will require expert service and repair personnel.

 

What solution is best for your shop?

Placing a vehicle back into service to OEM recommended specification as efficiently as possible requires a team. When it comes to computer and collision avoidance systems on modern vehicles, it’s important to have a solution that won’t leave you hanging when it comes to completion of the repair.

When choosing a solution ask yourself:

• • Will it complete the OEM specified pre-scan & post-scan?
  • Will it perform required target setup and calibration?
  • Is the pre-scan just a sheet of paper, or is it a thorough process involving a visual inspection of potential electronic component damage?
  • Are you paying twice for a solution? (Remote scanning requires a member of your staff to attend the vehicle during the process) The shop ends up paying the remote company fees and tying up valuable employee time.
  • Is it faster than the dealerships, more complete and accurate than remote companies and more efficient and cost effective than trying to do it in-house?
